BLAZERS ARE A MUST HAVE: HERE ARE A FEW GREAT ONES

“Next thing I knew, she was all up on me screaming, yeah!” – Usher Raymond

Of course, that wasn’t often the case for us back in Usher’s heyday. Before “Yeah!” was released in 2004, most men’s style was perfectly respectable—a nice sweater, a few button ups, nothing fancy.

Something changed with that music video in 2004. The colors, the lights, the dancing, the music...but there was something else, too. A jacket. In the video, Usher wore a white sport coat over jeans with an open button-up shirt and sneakers. Most of us had a similar shirt and jeans and sneakers. We did not have that sport coat. Yet. Within weeks, this was the trend. Fellas everywhere were dusting their suits off and pairing the coat with jeans. And you know what? It looked good.

Not as good as Usher, though. He’s fabulous.

Looking back through the lens of today’s fashion, his coat was too big and too white. The fits and trends have evolved past that style. But we learned something in 2004 about being inspired to dress up and look our best. And that a sport coat can play a vital part in looking put together.

The sport coat done poorly doesn’t make us look our best. The right one can enhance a look for almost any occasion—a dinner date, a meeting, drinks with friends. It’s all fair game. Take a look at some of our favorites, and let us know how you plan to wear your coat the next time your look needs a boost.

Knit Blazers have been on the rise for sometime now. Knit Blazers are the certainly the most casual of the many looks. I really like the Banana Republic Sweater Blazer. It’s both blazer and cardigan at the same time. You can wear it with a shirt and a knit tie, or with a tee and joggers.

Less constructed blazers are an easy-to-wear and casual spin on this classically dressy piece. With open-patch pockets and no inner lining, this easygoing blazer from J. Crew is a do-it-all garment. It layers perfectly with dress shirts, wovens, tees, and more.

Knit blazers have been growing in popularity for some time now. The fabric and stretchy fit make this the most casual iteration of the sport coat. Banana Republic’s sweater blazer combines the look of a jacket and the comfort of a cardigan into one piece. Pair it with a shirt and knit tie or a tee and joggers for a wide range of looks.

Like we said, the variety of blazer options is extensive. We hope you’re inspired to step up your fashion game from time to time. Share your favorite blazer with us in the comments, subscribe to the blog for the latest updates, and follow us on Instagram.
